Yooka Laylee seems to be the gift that just keeps on giving. First it promised us that style of 3D adventuring that so many of us missed for so long. Second, it promised it on every platform under the sun (except Wii U because of technical difficulties (boo hiss)) and even a Nintendo Switch release. Now they’re also promising local multiplayer in the form of eight minigames. If anyone knows how to do fun multiplayer minigames it’s definitely these guys, since Banjo Kazooie, Tooie and even DK 64 had either multiplayer or something approaching minigame status in the singleplayer sections.
If that wasn’t enough, a second controller can also be plugged in so another player can grab quills and store butterflies to heal Yooka-Laylee if they get in a bind. If that sounds familiar, then it’s because Mario Galaxy had a similar thing and it was actually very good indeed. It’s not full-on co-op, but it’s far more interactive than you’d think and if you’re playing with a friend or family member then it’s actually quite fun.
It’s not far off now with its release on April 11th, and we’re really looking forward to it as we’re nostalgic old farts.
