Puyo Puyo Tetris launches in April for PS4 and Switch

Do you like Puyo Puyo? Do you like Tetris? If the answer to both of those questions is ‘yes’, hold on to your underpants because we are going to blow. Your. Mind.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is a thing that is happening, and this thing is happening in Europe on April 28th! Available on a variety of formats in Japan since 2014, Sega’s puzzle mash-up will be rotating its colourful way to the PS4 and Switch in NA and EU territories this year. It has a dagnabbed story mode! “Oh no! What’re all those things falling out of the sky?” and so on (that’s an actual line from the game, featured in the above trailer).

Up to four players can play against one another, and we do love games that nurture the dying art of local multiplayer. You can play Tetris, or you can play Puyo Puyo. Or you can play a mode that swaps between the games at set periods. Or – as the name promises – you can play a mode that forces Puyo Puyo and Tetris together in unholy matrimony to produce a mutant child with the DNA of both.

The choice of Western formats is interesting (Japan also has 3DS, Wii U, Vita, PS3, and Xbox One versions), but the pricing may raise a few eyebrows. On PS4 the game will see a disc-only release, with a £24.99 RRP. The Switch version (you can see where this is going, can’t you) will carry an RRP of £34.99. The Switch will enjoy both a physical and a digital release… with both selling at the same price. Hmm. It has been informally pointed out to us that this sort of pricing is in line with what other publishers are doing. Besides, it’s still cheaper than Super Bomberman R.
