The pocket edition of Final Fantasy XV has received an official release date

Buckle up Final Fantasy fans! The Final Fantasy XV pocket edition has been officially announced by Square Enix and is set to release on the 9th of February. That’s only a week away from today!

A translated report, that came directly from Square Enix, was translated by Siliconera and it details that pre-registration is already available on Android’s Google Play and the Apple App Store.

The pocket edition of Final Fantasy sports a “chibi” art style, which is reminiscent of tiny anime characters. Don’t be fooled by the change in graphics though, this version still packs all the cutscene punches from the original game. The voice acting has also been kept intact, giving a depth to the game despite the simplistic graphics.

Changes have been made to the gameplay, however, and according to Square Enix, this will be a lighter version of the original game that anyone can jump into. A PC version will also be released at a later date, but there’s been no confirmed release date on it at the moment.

There is a major change in the game’s presentation though, not just graphical, it will also release as a 10 episode game instead of one whole game. This is similar to the direction that Square Enix is taking with the remake of Final Fantasy VII.

Square Enix is also looking at the possibility of releasing Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition on the Nintendo Switch. The original Final Fantasy XV game was planned to be released on the Switch, but due to the console’s graphical limitations, it was scrapped. Final Fantasy XV, which was originally known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, began its development in 2006, but was not released until a full decade later in 2016. The game has received both positive and negative reviews, with the latter being mostly about the game’s modernization and a detachment from the roots of Final Fantasy’s beloved turn-based JRPG combat system. Luckily, the criticism didn’t deter the game from being highly praised and awarded multiple Game of the Year and People’s Choice awards.

A Windows port of Final Fantasy XV is scheduled to release within the first half of 2018, but no exact date has been announced as of yet. An updated version of the game, titled Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition is set to release March of 2018 and will be available on both consoles, plus Windows.
