Zelda Wii U delayed to 2016; will not show at E3

Nooooooo!! But also, yeeessss!!

In a suspiciously neutral tweet, the official Nintendo account informed the world that Eiji Aonuma “has a message to share”. The link led to the above YouTube video, and the video makes it increasingly obvious that… oh, no… the Wii U Zelda game has been delayed. Very much so. It never had a solid release date, but was promised for this year; that is now not going to happen. What’s more, a tweet that followed revealed that the game will definitely not be making an appearance at this year’s E3.

Aonuma only explicitly says (according to the translation) that a 2015 release is not “top priority”, but it’s now all but certain that the game won’t be released this side of Christmas. Equally, there’s no guarantee that it will now hit shelves even as early as 2016; although we’re optimistic enough to decide that’s when it’ll happen, and even stick that year in the headline. And heck, you don’t get any more certain than that, right?

It’s the standard line whenever a game gets delayed but, in this case, we’re inclined to believe that the release being pushed back really is – as Aonuma says – to make this the best Zelda possible. Zelda fans have at least had their hearts broken months rather than weeks in advance, and still have a lot to dust their Wii Us off for this year (Splatoon, Mario Maker, Yoshi’s Wooly World, X). Still; damn it!
